Why Goals Create Your Future

As a certified life coach?my first concern when I am coaching you, is to make sure you understand that the goals you are setting today and will eventually be achieving, are the pathways to creating your future. Why is this so important? Because without goals, and a plan to ?achieve them, we have no destination. We are choosing to leave our future to chance. We are not controlling our destiny and thus our lives.

Goals Are a Choice

Why are goals a choice? Goals are a choice because we consciously choose to write them down and figure out how to go about their attainment. This means we have put some thought into the goal. It will serve a greater purpose, that will help us take our lives in the direction we want.

Not Many People Set Goals

I believe the problem with not setting goals for most of us, is that we never created the habit back when we were teens and young adults. Goal setting was not taught back when I was in elementary, junior or high school. So I did not create the habit back then. In fact, it was not until I heard ?The Strangest Secret? by Earl Nightingale in my mid twenties, that it dawned upon me how significant goal setting was.

How To Create Your Future with Goals

So how can we create or future with goal setting? Look, goal setting is a skill that can be learned and mastered. Just like any other skill, it takes some practice to perfect. Repetition is the key to building our goal setting muscles. So how do we set goals? Where do we begin?

Here is a quick goal setting outline to help you get started. This is the goal setting method I was trained on by Dr. Shad Helmstetter. Dr. Helmstetter is a life coach and best selling author. I personally use this method for myself and all of those I coach.

First, make a list of each significant area in your life. (Health, Relationships, Career, Finances, Personal Development, Self-Esteem, Quality of Life and Personal Organization). For each of these areas, you should write down your three most important goals. Once you have done that, look at each goal and think about how to prioritize them. Set a completion date for each goal.

Next, for each goal, write down 2-3 obstacles that have stood in your way. They may be internal obstacles or external obstacles.

Finally, for each obstacle, write down the action steps necessary to overcome them. Date those action steps. Take action on these actions steps and refine them as needed until you reach your goal.

Tigers top Yankees 2-1, need 1 win for pennant

DETROIT (AP) ? Justin Verlander took a shutout into the ninth inning and the Detroit Tigers held on to beat the New York Yankees 2-1 Tuesday night for a 3-0 lead in the AL championship series.

Phil Coke gave up consecutive singles with two outs in the ninth before striking out postseason star Raul Ibanez for his second save in two games.

Verlander allowed only a pair of singles by Ichiro Suzuki and a leadoff homer by Eduardo Nunez in the ninth. Delmon Young hit a solo home run for the Tigers, and Miguel Cabrera had an RBI double.

Yankees starter Phil Hughes was lifted in the fourth because of a stiff back, and manager Joe Girardi's lineup shuffle ? Alex Rodriguez was benched again ? failed to snap New York out of its untimely hitting funk.

The Tigers were on a historic pitching run even before their ace took the mound Tuesday. With the exception of a four-run ninth inning against Detroit closer Jose Valverde in Game 1, New York had been shut out for the entire series.

Nunez's homer snapped a streak of 37 innings by Detroit starters without allowing an earned run, the longest in a single postseason in the live-ball era.

Verlander fell just short of a second straight shutout after stopping the Oakland Athletics in the decisive fifth game of the division series. He struck out only three but kept New York off the scoreboard until the homer to left field by Nunez, the first run allowed by the powerful right-hander since he gave up a leadoff homer to Coco Crisp in Game 1 of the ALDS.

Verlander got Brett Gardner on a tapper before he was lifted after 132 pitches, one shy of his career high set in Game 5 of last year's ALCS against Texas. Coke came in and allowed two-out hits to Mark Teixeira and Robinson Cano, with the latter snapping a drought of 29 at-bats without a hit.

But Ibanez, who hit tying and winning homers in the same game in the ALDS against Baltimore and tied Game 1 of this series with a homer in the ninth, struck out swinging at a breaking ball to end it.

Valverde's meltdown nearly cost Detroit the first game of this series, but the Tigers were able to win 6-4 in 12 innings. Coke closed out a 3-0 victory in Game 2 and was able to hold on Tuesday in a tense final inning.

Hughes matched Verlander in a scoreless duel until Young led off the Detroit fourth with a line drive over the wall in left field. It was his seventh homer in the last two postseasons ? he's already the Tigers' career leader in that department.

Five of those homers ? in only eight games ? have come against the Yankees.

Andy Dirks followed with a walk, and Hughes was pulled with an 0-2 count on Jhonny Peralta. David Phelps came on and got out of the inning, but the Yankees now have a pitching injury to go along with all their hitting problems.

Hughes allowed a run and three hits in three-plus innings. He walked three and struck out one.

The Yankees kept it close, dodging several Detroit rallies. The Tigers added an unearned run in the fifth when Eric Chavez ? Rodriguez's replacement at third ? misplayed a grounder. Cabrera, the AL Triple Crown winner, followed with an RBI double.

Cabrera has a 16-game hitting streak in LCS play, breaking a tie for that record with Manny Ramirez and Pete Rose, according to STATS LLC.

But Cabrera hit into a double play with the bases loaded in the sixth, preventing the Tigers from adding more runs.

New noninvasive test for colorectal cancer shows promise

ScienceDaily (Oct. 16, 2012) ? A new noninvasive test for colorectal cancer screening demonstrated high sensitivity for detecting colorectal cancer, in particular precancers that are most likely to develop into cancer, according to data presented at the 11th Annual AACR International Conference on Frontiers in Cancer Prevention Research, held here Oct. 16-19, 2012.

"This test measures different kinds of DNA changes, known as methylation and mutation, along with a measure of fecal blood. By combining these measures, we can look for the kinds of biological changes that are most frequently found in precancers and cancers in the colon," said Graham P. Lidgard, Ph.D., senior vice president of research and development and chief science officer at Exact Sciences, which developed the test and sponsored the study.

Lidgard and colleagues analyzed 1,003 patient samples from 36 study sites and developed an analytic algorithm for the novel, automated stool DNA-based test platform, which generated a positive or negative result for each patient. The specimens were collected either before colonoscopy bowel preparation in screening and surveillance patients or at least seven days post-colonoscopy from patients with colorectal cancer and large precancers.

The control group included 796 patients with negative colonoscopies or small polyps (less than 1 cm), and the case group included 207 patients with confirmed colorectal cancer or precancers.

"By analyzing samples with confirmed diagnoses from colonoscopy, we were able to build an analytic algorithm that combines our 11 stool-based biomarkers into a single result," Lidgard said. "Through this study, we were able to demonstrate a high detection rate for both cancers and precancers using our automated analytic platform and algorithm."

The researchers reported that the test detected 98 percent of all cancers as well as 83 percent of precursors with high-grade dysplasia and 57 percent of precursors 1 cm or larger overall, at 90 percent nominal specificity.

"We are encouraged by the results of this study for detecting cancer and cancer precursors, especially the precursor lesions with high-grade dysplasia, an abnormality broadly recognized as being associated with a higher risk for progression to cancer itself," Lidgard said. "Current screening tests using only fecal occult blood are biologically limited in their ability to detect precursors to colorectal cancer."

Exact Sciences is involved in a large colorectal cancer screening study collecting samples from more than 10,000 patients prior to screening colonoscopy. The company plans to apply for FDA approval after completing the study.

Group: Libya rebels 'executed' Gadhafi loyalists

New evidence implicates Libyan militia in the apparent execution of dozens of detainees in the immediate wake of Moammar Gadhafi?s capture and death last year, according to Human Rights Watch.

In a 50-page report issued Wednesday, the New York-based organization said at least 66 members of Gadhafi?s convoy were captured and ?summarily executed? by militia based in Misrata.

By comparing mobile phone video taken by the opposition militia members with hospital morgue photographs, HRW have identified numerous detainees who were captured in Sirte and later executed at the town?s Mahari Hotel.

?When we arrived, there were 53 bodies lying in the garden of the hotel. The first indication we had this was an execution site was that many victims had their hands tied behind their backs,? said Peter Bouckaert, emergencies director at HRW. Volunteer workers at the scene said that relatives of additional victims had recovered their bodies prior to the Human Rights Watch visit.

"In case after case we investigated, the individuals had been videotaped alive by the opposition fighters who held them, and then found dead hours later," Bouckaert said.

HRW said these killings constitute the largest documented execution of detainees by anti-Gadhafi forces during the eight-month conflict in Libya.

In an exclusive interview with NBC News' Ann Curry, Libyan President Mohamed Magarief says he has "no doubt" the attack on the U.S. Consulate in Benghazi was pre-planned.

One case cited by HRW is that of Ahmed Ali Yusuf al-Ghariyani, 29, a Navy recruit originally from Tawergha, a Gadhafi stronghold. In a phone video that is believed to show him in captivity, militia forces are seen to abuse and taunt him.

Al-Ghariyani?s body was later found at the Mahari Hotel and was photographed by hospital staff and buried as unidentified body number 86. He was later identified by family members from the hospital photographs.

The report also casts doubt on what HRW said is the Libyan authorities? account of the fate of Gadhafi and his son Motassim, both of whom are officially reported to have died in cross-fire.

In video released with the report, Moammar is seen alive and bloodied in the hands of the rebels, in images similar to those widely circulated in the days after his death.?

Less than a year after Moammar Gadhafi's fall, Libyan's vote in what U.N. General Secretary Ban Ki-moon hailed as "a march toward democracy." It's the country's first democratic election in more than half a century as Libyans choose a National Congress. Lindsey Hilsu, Channel 4 Europe, reports.??

According to the report, Motassim Gaddafi was also captured alive at the scene of the Sirte battle. He was wounded and then filmed being transported by members of a Misrata-based opposition militia to their home city. He was again filmed in a room, smoking cigarettes and drinking water. By the evening, his dead body, with a new wound on his throat that was not visible in the prior video footage, was being publicly displayed in Misrata.

Peter Brouckaert said the Libyan authorities? refusal to accept or investigate atrocities by former rebels shows ?a government in denial.?

?They are not in a position to confront the militia,? he said, ?It shows who?s in power in Libya.?

Calls for militias to be brought under the control of the defense or interior ministries have met resistance from some fighters.

The president pledges he will get to the bottom of the events that led to the death of a U.S. ambassador in Libya and calls Romney's criticisms of his actions following the attack "offensive."

Meanwhile, some groups have been implicated in revenge attacks and communal strife, while members of one Islamist militia have been accused of taking part in the attack on the U.S. Consulate in the eastern city Benghazi on Sept. 11 that killed four Americans, including U.S. Ambassador to Libya Chris Stevens.

In the aftermath of Stevens' death, popular resentment surged and thousands took to the streets of Benghazi demanding the dismantlement of the militias. The government has taken over some militia headquarters and appointed military officers to run the groups, and designated some "outlawed" and others "tolerated."
