ORANGE ? Children's Hospital of Orange County will soon open its own emergency department and operating rooms, designed for the needs of premature infants to strapping high school athletes.
A new $560 million expansion has tripled the size of CHOC with construction of a seven-story tower. Various departments will open early next month, but the culmination will come in March when the pediatric hospital opens a 31-bed emergency department and seven operating rooms.
A view of the first floor reception area of Children's Hospital of Orange County's new Bill Holmes Tower is seen from the second floor.

"It will be the first time since we opened our doors that all the services will be provided under one roof," said Kim Cripe, chief executive. "It's a state-of-the-art facility. It's serene. It's cheerful. It's inspirational. We're extremely proud of what we've created."
Click here to take a video tour of CHOC's new tower.
Since CHOC opened in 1964, it has relied on neighboring St. Joseph Hospital for an array of facilities, services and equipment, including operating rooms and the emergency department. Once the new tower is operational, patients will no longer be transported via underground tunnel between the two hospitals. CHOC also will provide its own cardiac testing, diagnostic imaging and lab services.
"You really can't say it enough: Children truly aren't little adults," Cripe said. "Their anatomy is different; their emotional needs are quite different."
On Saturday, CHOC will offer public tours during a community celebration to mark the finish of the 426,000-square-foot tower. Construction began in the fall of 2009.
The new tower contains all private rooms, including two larger, specially outfitted "rainbow rooms" for children nearing the end of life. At the request of cancer patients and their parents, the oncology floor contains a gym. A second-floor lobby entrance will feature a giant sea-themed Nemo mobile and a huge interactive screen with animated aquarium life created by Disney for CHOC.
A twinkling starry sky includes a constellation of CHOCO the bear, the hospital's mascot, who was designed by a Disney illustrator. Each level incorporates artwork and floor mosaics of nature themes such as birds and sky, bugs and flowers and outer space.
A 3,000-square-foot outdoor play and rehab area was designed to look like a beach boardwalk and can accommodate IV poles. A pool table and air hockey game will outfit the teen area.
Other child-centric touches range from tiny chairs in the emergency room lobby to cardiac testing equipment designed for still growing hearts. When children need to undergo MRIs, they will be given virtual reality goggles that will play movies.
"They've been shown to reduce sedation time, imaging time and help them stay still," said Dr. Nathan Holmes, medical director of radiology.
Dr. James Perog, interim medical director for the emergency department, said patients will be moved quickly from the lobby to a bed to minimize hours-long wait times. He said CHOC's patients and St. Joseph's older patients will benefit from having their own waiting rooms and facilities.
"When we separate, it's going to be better for both age groups," Perog said.
CHOC's architect Gary Owens said distracting young patients, their parents and siblings, goes a long way in reducing anxiety.
"The big message was a journey of discovery," Owens said. "As you walk through the whole space, everywhere you look there's something to see, there's something new."
CHOC will hold a free community celebration Saturday from 1-4 p.m. at 1201 W. La Veta Ave. in Orange. La Veta between Main and Pepper streets will be closed for the event. Guided tours will be offered and there will be live music, activities and appearances from Disney and Nickelodeon stars.

A small-scale vertical axis wind turbine designed by Wing Power Energy. Image: courtesy of WPE
The vision is beautiful, if not somewhat tried: a large cluster of 360 foot tall towers encircled with long, slightly cupped blades, similar to airplane wings, spinning in the wind like a wind vane. The result? An outpouring of clean electricity at the Megawatt (MW) scale.
That?s what Harry Ruda, CEO of Wing Power Energy, a small vertical axis wind turbine (VAWT) company, sees when he imagines his turbines coming of age. He?s one of the believers out there gallantly chasing the dream of making VAWTS big.
Currently, his 2-kilowatt capacity turbines stand 34 feet tall. However diminutive (both in terms of height and output), Ruda believes these turbines are the blueprint for the next generation of wind energy, that when scaled up, will revamp wind power at the utility level, ushering in wind 3.0.
The quest to slay the faulty dragon of conventional, or horizontal axis, wind turbines (HAWTS) has been an impossible one, thus far. The domination of?conventional wind comes from their reliability, efficiency and increasingly low cost, despite vertical?s touted improvements ? less expensive to build and maintain, safer for birds and bats, quieter, and their ability to use less open space.
?VAWTs are a perfectly legitimate technology, but these are not toys or lawn ornaments,? enthuses Paul Gipe, a renewable energy advocate and analyst, who?s worked in the industry for over 30 years, ?They are supposed to produce electricity, and must compete with all the other machines that produce electricity. Right now, no one produces a VAWT that is more cost effective than a conventional wind turbine.?
There are enough examples of VAWT failure to solidify this air of doubt. According to Gipe, in California in the 1980s, hundreds of VAWTs were in operation producing millions of kilowatt-hours of electricity each year. Those turbines were not cost effective and were less reliable, as evidenced by their aluminum blades weakening and flying off after operating for several hundreds of hours (Eeeek!). Not one of these turbines is operating today.
More recently, a handful of small startups have tried to take up the cause. Helix Wind, a company that seemed to be heading in the right direction, ended its run due to financial troubles. Another, Windspire Energy, received accolades for its streamline design, was promoted in Popular Science?s ?Best of What?s New? in 2008, and then declared Chapter 11 last year when it lost huge amounts of funds while repairing unreliable parts under warranty.
The problem, says John O. Dabiri, the Director for the Center for Bioinspired Wind Energy, California Institute of Technology, is that even though multiple companies are premiering new design developments like improved efficiency of 10-15%, they?ve still ignored the Achilles heal of vertical axis wind ? fees and functionality.
?The main goal should be to change the cost and reliability of the designs, not its efficiency,? said Dabiri. ?If a 2kw turbine costs more than $5,000.00 the company is blowing smoke about its viability.?
This means a turbine would have to be in the range of $1-$2 per kilowatt of maximum power production, and about 5 cents/kwh of electricity to get anywhere close to being competitive with the current fossil fuel market. It would also have to operate smoothly for about 20 years.
If this $5,000 cost point is the measure of success, Wing Energy?s current turbine isn?t likely to make headlines soon their small turbine sells for about $10,000. The Economies of scale bear much of this blame, since until a product is mass-produced, it?s difficult to keep manufacturing, installation, and distribution costs low. However, so too is the material choice.
?We do think there?s a lot of promise for VAWTs,? said Dabiri speaking on the future, but added that the [designers] need to start by using the right materials for small turbines before trying their hand at large wind.?
It?s this sliver of hope that keeps companies trying, including Venger Wind, Wepower Eco, and Urban Green Energy. This is the list that Wing Power wants to best with their turbine that combines the savonius and darrieus design into one technology, allowing it to operate very efficiently in low and high wind speed. This design is already being utilized on the micro wind scale to further the reach of cellphones.
?We believe that verticals will ultimately rule the day and replace horizontals because of their innate benefits,? says Ruda pitching his concept. ?One of our missions is to prove this theory by starting with modeling 100 kilowatt capacity turbines and then moving to megawatt.?

(Reuters) - Research In Motion Ltd has a gathered a number music and video partners for its BlackBerry 10 storefront, ranging from Walt Disney Co's Walt Disney Studios and Sony Corp's Sony Pictures to Vivendi SA's Universal Music Group and Warner Music Group.
RIM announced the partners on Monday, ahead of Wednesday's launch of its first phones based on its much-delayed BlackBerry 10 smartphone platform, which may be the company's last chance to regain ground it has lost to Apple Inc's iPhone.
Content partnerships are a crucial part of this effort as analysts have largely attributed the success of iPhone and devices running Google Inc's Android software to the selection of applications and media content they offer.
RIM said its BlackBerry World would include an extensive catalog of songs, movies and television shows. Most movies will be available the same day they are released on DVD, and with next-day availability for many TV series.
RIM's offerings will also include Matador Records, Rough Trade Records and Sony Music Entertainment music that will be initially be available in 18 countries.
The video downloads and rentals will initially be available just in the United States, United Kingdom and Canada and will include TV shows from providers such as ABC Studios, BBC Worldwide and CBS Corp.
RIM's U.S. shares were up 0.9 percent at $17.70 in trading before the market opened.

One of the worst nightclub fires in history has claimed a terrible toll in the southern Brazil city of Santa Maria, with at least 233 dead by the most recent count.
By Stephen Singer, The Associated Press
Argentina, a year later. Thailand in 2008. Russia in 2009.
For survivors of a 2003 Rhode Island nightclub fire that was one of the deadliest in U.S. history, the fire in Brazil that killed hundreds Sunday is the latest in a series of reminders that no matter how far away, those who ignore the lessons of their tragedy can pay a horrible cost.
On a cold night in February 2003, the rock band Great White took the stage at The Station nightclub in West Warwick, R.I. During the show, pyrotechnics set fire to flammable soundproofing foam that lined the walls and ceiling, killing 100 and injuring 200.
Over the decade since, survivors have come together time and again over news of similar disastrous fires overseas.
"We're very tight," said Todd King, one of the survivors. "You can't put into words what we saw."
He said he was woken up Sunday morning by a storm of text messages from others who survived the Rhode Island fire, asking, "Can you believe this is happening again?"
"I'm surprised nobody has learned," he said.
Another Rhode Island survivor, Victoria Eagan, said she and others noted that each of three earlier fires was caused by indoor pyrotechnics igniting with material in the building. Investigators have just begun their work in Brazil, but witnesses said a flare or firework lit by band members may have started the fire.
"I had the same reaction as the other three times," Eagan said Sunday. "We're doomed to repeat history and I wish they could learn."
In the year after the Rhode Island fire, a flare ignited ceiling foam at an overcrowded nightclub in Buenos Aires, Argentina, killing 194 people.
Indoor fireworks were blamed for a fire at a club in Bangkok on New Year's Eve 2008 in which 66 partygoers were killed.
And another indoor fireworks display at a nightclub in Perm, Russia, ignited a plastic ceiling decorated with branches, killing 152 people in December 2009.
In Rhode Island, the Station fire brought about sweeping changes to the state's fire code with one intent: Never again.
Sprinklers are now required in nightclubs and bars with occupancy limits of 100 or more, nightclub workers must be trained in fire safety and more money was set aside for fire safety classes in schools.
Rhode Island also banned pyrotechnics in all but its largest public venues and local fire marshals were enabled to order immediate repairs and write tickets for violations.
Eagan said the changes were necessary in Rhode Island.
"I wish it would spread to other countries," she said.
A deadly blaze overseas does not seem so distant because of the Rhode Island tragedy, Eagan said.
"It's a tragedy that hits close to home," she said. "It's maddening to see it happen again."
In an emailed statement, the Station Fire Memorial Foundation, which is building a memorial to those affected by the 2003 fire, compared the two fires.
"One cannot help but notice the similarities between this tragedy and the Station nightclub fire that occurred nearly 10 years ago," the group said.

DUBAI (Reuters) - Iran said on Monday it had launched a live monkey into space, seeking to show off missile delivery systems that are alarming the West which fears the technology could be used to deliver a nuclear warhead.
The Defense Ministry announced the launch as world powers sought to agree a date and venue with Iran for resuming talks to resolve a standoff with the West over Tehran's nuclear program before it degenerates into a new Middle East war.
Efforts to nail down a new meeting have failed repeatedly and the powers fear Iran is exploiting the diplomatic vacuum to hone the means to produce nuclear weapons.
The Islamic Republic denies seeking weapons capability and says it seeks only electricity from its uranium enrichment so it can export more of its considerable oil wealth.
The powers have proposed new talks in February, a spokesman for the European Union's foreign policy chief said on Monday, hours after Russia urged all concerned to "stop behaving like children" and commit to a meeting.
Iran earlier in the day denied media reports of a major explosion at one of its most sensitive, underground enrichment plants, describing them as Western propaganda designed to influence the nuclear talks.
The Defense Ministry said the space launch of the monkey coincided "with the days of" the Prophet Mohammad's birthday, which was last week, but gave no date, according to a statement carried by the official news agency IRNA.
The launch was "another giant step" in space technology and biological research "which is the monopoly of a few countries", the statement said.
The small grey monkey was pictured strapped into a padded seat and being loaded into the Kavoshgar rocket dubbed "Pishgam" (Pioneer) which on state media said reached a height of more than 120 km (75 miles), IRNA said.
"This shipment returned safely to Earth with the anticipated speed along with the live organism," Defense Minister Ahmad Vahidi told the semi-official Fars news agency. "The launch of Kavoshgar and its retrieval is the first step towards sending humans into space in the next phase."
There was no independent confirmation of the launch.
SIGNIFICANT
The West worries that long-range ballistic technology used to propel Iranian satellites into orbit could be put to use delivering nuclear warheads.
Bruno Gruselle of France's Foundation for Strategic Research said that if the monkey launch report were true it would suggest a "quite significant" engineering feat by Iran.
"If you can show that you are able to protect a vehicle of this sort from re-entry, then you can probably protect a military warhead and make it survive the high temperatures and high pressures of re-entering," Gruselle said.
The monkey launch would be similar to sending up a satellite weighing some 2,000 kg (4,400 pounds), he said. Success would suggest a capacity to deploy a surface-to-surface missile with a range of a few thousand kilometers (miles).
But Michael Elleman, a missile expert at the International Institute for Strategic Studies think-tank, said Iran had demonstrated "no new military or strategic capability" with the launch.
"Nonetheless, Iran has an ambitious space exploration program that includes the goal of placing a human in space in the next five or so years and a human-inhabited orbital capsule by the end of the decade," Elleman said. "Today's achievement is one step toward the goal, albeit a small one."
The Islamic Republic announced plans in 2011 to send a monkey into space, but that attempt was reported to have failed.
Nuclear-weapons capability requires three components - enough fissile material such as highly enriched uranium, a reliable weapons device miniaturized to fit into a missile cone, and an effective delivery system, such as a ballistic missile that can grow out of a space launch program.
Iran's efforts to develop and test ballistic missiles and build a space launch capability have contributed to Israeli calls for pre-emptive strikes on Iranian nuclear sites and billions of dollars of U.S. ballistic missile defense spending.
MANOEUVRING OVER NEXT TALKS
A spokesman for EU foreign policy chief Catherine Ashton said the powers had offered a February meeting to Iran, after a proposal to meet at the end of January was refused.
"Iran did not accept our offer to go to Istanbul on January 28 and 29 and so we have offered new dates in February. We have continued to offer dates since December. We are disappointed the Iranians have not yet agreed," Michael Mann reporters.
He said Iranian negotiators had imposed new conditions for resuming talks and that EU powers were concerned this might be a stalling tactic. The last in a sporadic series of fruitless talks was held last June.
Iranian officials deny blame for the delays and say Western countries squandered opportunities for meetings by waiting until after the U.S. presidential election in November.
"We have always said that we are ready to negotiate until a result is reached and we have never broken off discussions," IRNA quoted Iranian Foreign Minister Ali Akbar Salehi as saying.
Salehi has suggested holding the next round in Cairo but said the powers wanted another venue. He also said that Sweden, Kazakhstan and Switzerland had offered to host the talks.
In Moscow, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov told a news conference: "We are ready to meet at any location as soon as possible. We believe the essence of our talks is far more important (than the site), and we hope that common sense will prevail and we will stop behaving like little children."
Ashton is overseeing diplomatic contacts on behalf of the powers hoping to persuade Tehran to stop higher-grade uranium enrichment and accept stricter U.N. inspections in return for civilian nuclear cooperation and relief from U.N. sanctions.
IRAN DENIES FORDOW BLAST
Reuters has been unable to verify reports since Friday of an explosion early last week at the underground Fordow bunker that some Israeli and Western media said wrought heavy damage.
"The false news of an explosion at Fordow is Western propaganda ahead of nuclear negotiations to influence their process and outcome," IRNA quoted deputy Iranian nuclear energy agency chief Saeed Shamseddin Bar Broudi as saying.
In late 2011 the plant at Fordow began producing uranium enriched to 20 percent fissile purity, well above the 3.5 percent level normally needed for nuclear power stations.
Western governments say the higher-grade enrichment marks a notable step towards weapons-grade uranium, even though it is below the 90 percent level suitable for nuclear bombs.
Iran says its enhanced enrichment is to make fuel for a Tehran research reactor that produces isotopes for medical care.
Diplomats in Vienna, where the U.N. nuclear watchdog agency is based, said on Monday they had no knowledge of any incident at Fordow but were looking into the reports. One Western diplomat said he did not believe them to be correct.
The U.N. International Atomic Energy Agency, which regularly inspects Iranian nuclear sites including Fordow, had no immediate comment.
Iran has accused Israel and the United States of trying to sabotage its nuclear program with cyber attacks and assassinations of its nuclear scientists. Washington has denied any role in the killings while Israel has declined to comment.

YANGON, Myanmar (AP) ? The World Bank announced a long-awaited deal to allow Myanmar to clear part of its huge decades-old foreign debt, opening the door for new much-needed lending to jumpstart its lagging economy.
The bank's Washington headquarters said in a statement Sunday that the Japan Bank for International Cooperation, the country's overseas development bank, will provide a bridge loan to Myanmar to cover outstanding debt to the World Bank and the Asian Development Bank, which totals about $900 million.
Myanmar stopped payments on its old loans about 1987, making it ineligible for new development lending.
The deal is a major breakthrough for Myanmar, with loans likely to go to upgrading its dilapidated infrastructure, including electricity and ports. The knock-on effect would be to bring in more foreign direct investment, already attracted by the country's relatively low-cost economy.
"We have not been allowed financial assistance for more than 20 years and the clearing of foreign debts will help bring fresh new loans for Myanmar," said Maung Aung, a researcher and economist at the Union of Myanmar Federation of Chambers of Commerce and Industry. "We welcome the deal because the country's infrastructure development can be carried out only with the financial assistance from the big financial institutions like the World Bank and ADB."
The debt deal clears the way for Japan to push ahead with plans for a $12.3 billion plan to build a special economic zone near the capital which is being developed by a consortium including Japanese trading firms Mitsubishi Corp., Marubeni Corp. and Sumitomo Corp.
The deal is also likely to draw criticism, because it comes as Myanmar's army is pushing hard against ethnic Kachin rebels in the country's north, in an echo of the notorious counterinsurgency campaigns of previous military regimes.
A former general, Thein Sein, became the country's elected president in 2011 and began reversing almost five decades of military repression by instituting political and economic reforms.
He won the substantial easing of economic and political sanctions imposed against the junta by the United States and other nations. But some pro-democracy activists say his administration has been rewarded too much, too fast, allowing some abuses to continue, such as repression of ethnic minorities.
The World Bank had already made some exceptions to providing new aid.
In November, it approved an $80 million project to provide $25,000 grants to villages in 15 townships across the country, where community councils will identify the kind of help they want, such as roads, bridges, irrigation systems, schools, health clinics or rural markets. The bank reopened its office in Myanmar in August last year.
The bank was able to act because President Barack Obama lifted a long-standing U.S. restriction on international financial institutions, such as the World Bank, lending to Myanmar after Congress passed legislation enabling that step. It was one in a series of steps by Washington to reward the Southeast Asian country for its democratic reforms.
The World Bank statement did not detail the mechanics of the new deal to clear the debt arrears.
It did say the bank's board on Jan. 22 approved a $440 million "Reengagement and Reform Support Credit to Myanmar."
It said the credit would support "critical reforms being implemented by the Government to strengthen macroeconomic stability, improve public financial management and improve the investment climate."
It added that its proceeds would "also help the Government meet its foreign exchange needs, including repaying (the) bridge loan" and that there are currently discussions with the government to identify priority needs.
Separately, the Manila-based Asian Development Bank announced it would extend a $512 million loan to Myanmar under the same sort of arrangement with the Japan Bank for International Cooperation ,
"Myanmar has come a long way in its economic transformation, undertaking unprecedented reforms to improve people's lives, especially the poor and vulnerable," the statement quoted the World Bank's Myanmar Country Director Annette Dixon as saying.
"Much work remains to be done. We are committed to helping the government accelerate poverty reduction and build shared prosperity. The Bank's engagement, together with the ADB, the Government of Japan and other partners, will help attract investment, spur growth and create jobs."
Myanmar ran up $8.4 billion in debt during the socialist regime of the late Gen. Ne Win between 1962 and 1988, and $2.61 billion of debt after a new military junta took over in 1988, making for a total of just more than $11 billion.
The largest creditor before 1988 was Japan, with loans of $6.39 billion, and the biggest post-1988 creditor was China, with $2.13 billion.
According to the Japan External Trade Organization, Myanmar's exports to Japan totaled 1.73 billion kyat ($2 million) in 2011, while its imports from Japan were 2.7 billion kyat ($3.1 million).

DAVOS, Switzerland (AP) ? What's the hot gossip on the party circuit at Davos this year? No big Google bash.
For the past few years, the hottest invitation at the World Economic Forum was the Google party, where hundreds of the world's VIPs, especially the successful young technology entrepreneurs, would be out on the dance floor in droves, or trying to chat on the sidelines while shouting to be heard over the loud music.
The Davos veterans, often standing by the bar and looking at the scene, would agree they were probably looking at the men and women who will be running the world in the next 20 years or so.
Not this year.
Google spokeswoman Niki Fenwick confirmed the giant California-based Internet and technology company isn't throwing a Davos party this year, but she wouldn't say why.
The forum's founder, Klaus Schwab, said it is a sign of the times.
"I think the world is in a very serious situation and the annual meeting is a very serious event. We are not a fun event. We want to improve the state of the world. The world is not in a good shape at the moment," he told The Associated Press. "So I think it's really logical that we concentrate much more on substance."
The forum also changed its format this year, canceling the Sunday session and eliminating its splashy Saturday evening soiree featuring several bands, open bars and lots of food. It was thrown in past years by a host of countries, including India, Brazil and South Africa.
Instead, the forum will wrap up with a mountain-top reception early Saturday evening for the 2,500 top leaders from government, business and those who come to Davos to make connections and lobby the movers and shakers.
There have been a few private receptions and dinners featuring monarchs, presidents, prime ministers and celebrities, but nothing wild and glitzy to put on the dancing shoes for ? unless you fancy a Russian party Friday night featuring one of the country's top punk bands called Leningrad.
Microsoft held a reception Thursday night in a large room showcasing the company's latest technological innovations. Bill Gates was there, but it was no replacement for the Google bash. Potential crashers were barred, the crowd was relatively small, and there was background music only.
Davos did live up to its reputation for attracting celebrities.
Actress Charlize Theron, a U.N. messenger of peace and founder of an African outreach foundation, accepted an award for her humanitarian work at the forum's opening session Tuesday, and she starred at an invitation-only reception Wednesday hosted by Coca-Cola Chairman and CEO Muhtar Kent to support the fight to defeat AIDS.
Not to be outdone, rival PepsiCo Chairman and CEO Indra Nooyi hosted an invitation-only nightcap later that night for Derek Jeter, the captain of the New York Yankees, who was surrounded by baseball fans, many seeking autographs.
There also were dozens of private events where U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon and former U.S. Secretary of State Henry Kissinger ? among many others ? were VIP guests. Tina Brown was among the VIP hostesses.
Top government officials from Mongolia, Malaysia, India, Japan and South Korea, combined cocktails and cultural performances.
Pakistani cricket legend-turned-politician Imran Khan headlined a lunch and made headlines when he said he was very confident his party will sweep his country's upcoming elections.
Though champagne corks popped, the age of austerity definitely replaced the hedonism which had given Davos its work-hard, play-hard reputation.

Back at Google I/O last year, our very own Phil Nickinson posed the question -- might Google Now become an Android home screen? Well, a new custom launcher in the Play Store brings a little taste of that to life. SF Launcher Alpha comes from the same developer who brought us the Fixed 4.2 Clock Widget, and integrates the now familiar Google Now images with a card style layout for apps and widgets.
The top image is currently limited to that of San Francisco, London or the generic Google Now image, but will change with the time of day from dawn through day into dusk. Below it sits a widget 'card' and while only one widget is on show at any time, it scrolls so you can add as many as you like. Below that sits your favorite apps, the number displayed is customizable and you choose from scratch -- when you first start the launcher this card is empty.
Scrolling in from the left brings up the settings menu where the theme can be chosen along with numerous different visual setting tweaks, as well as controlling the behavior of tapping on the clock and top image. This can be customized to launch search, the stock clock app, quick settings, among others.
Scrolling in from the right brings up your full app drawer, all the while maintaining the top image and clock. It's a simple idea, and a simple launcher, but is definitely something different to other launchers we've seen. It's still in the early Alpha stages, but is available to download for free from the Google Play Store now. Click on past the break for a quick walkthrough video.

The INPEX-operated Ichthys LNG Project is on track to achieving first gas by the end of 2016 with the first steel cutting on Friday by Samsung Heavy Industries for what will be the world?s largest semi-submersible platform.
The 150 metre by 110 metre large central processing facility (CPF) will displace 140,000 tonnes and will have a peak gas export rate of 1,657 MMscfd, making it the largest of its kind. The semi-submersible is being built by world-leading offshore construction company Samsung Heavy Industry, with Mustang as the Detailed Engineering subcontractor.
This steel cutting milestone marks the first step in the fabrication process. INPEX President Director Australia Seiya Ito was on Geoje Island in Korea today where the first steel plates for the hull were cut.
?This is one of the most exciting parts of the Project ? the first materialisation of what has been many years of hard work; it?s when the design comes to life,? Mr Ito said.
?The hull size is nearly at the limit of what the biggest shipyards can build in their dry docks today. It will be moored by 28 mooring lines, representing more than 25,000 tonnes of anchor chain.
?Vicinay in Bilbao, Spain will supply the anchor chains for the mooring lines, together with an additional 15,000 tonnes of anchor chain for the Project?s floating production storage offloading (FPSO) vessel. The total represents more than the yearly worldwide production of large-scale anchor chains.?
Earlier this week on Tuesday 22 January another milestone was reached in Singapore, with the cutting of first steel for the turret of the FPSO vessel. The turret is the mooring point for the FPSO and the means by which it is able to weathervane in response to prevailing weather conditions. The FPSO will be capable of storing approximately 1.2 million barrels of condensate.
Mr Ito said both the CPF and FPSO will be world-class facilities.
?This has been a momentous week for the Ichthys LNG Project as it takes its first big step towards reaching its goal of watching the facilities sail from Geoje to Australia in late 2015,? Mr Ito said.
?We are thrilled to be on schedule to deliver first gas by the end of 2016.?

Jan. 24, 2013 ? Northwestern University graduate student Jonathan Barnes had a hunch for creating an exotic new chemical compound, and his idea that the force of love is stronger than hate proved correct. He and his colleagues are the first to permanently interlock two identical tetracationic rings that normally are repelled by each other. Many experts had said it couldn't be done.
On the surface, the rings hate each other because each carries four positive charges (making them tetracationic). But Barnes discovered by introducing radicals (unpaired electrons) onto the scene, the researchers could create a love-hate relationship in which love triumphs.
Unpaired electrons want to pair up and be stable, and it turns out the attraction of one ring's single electrons to the other ring's single electrons is stronger than the repelling forces.
The process links the rings not by a chemical bond but by a mechanical bond, which, once in place, cannot easily be torn asunder.
The study detailing this new class of stable organic radicals will be published Jan. 25 by the journal Science.
"It's not that people have tried and failed to put these two rings together -- they just didn't think it was possible," said Sir Fraser Stoddart, a senior author of the paper. "Now this molecule has been made. I cannot overemphasize Jonathan's achievement -- it is really outside the box. Now we are excited to see where this new chemistry leads us."
Sir Fraser is the Board of Trustees Professor of Chemistry in the Weinberg College of Arts and Sciences at Northwestern. In the late 1980s, he was one of the early pioneers to introduce an additional type of bond, the mechanical bond, into chemical compounds.
The new Northwestern compound has attractive electronic characteristics and can be made quickly and inexpensively. Down the road, it may be possible to expand this first linked pair into a longer chain-like polymer where this methodology could be useful in new technologies for batteries, semiconductors and electronic memory devices.
Driven by curiosity, Barnes only began to look at the radical chemistry of the ring cyclobis (paraquat-p-phenylene) two years ago, nearly 25 years after the ring was first made.
"I wondered what would happen if we took it all the way to the max," said Barnes, the paper's first author and a member of Stoddart's group. "Can we take two of these rings, each with four positive charges, and make them live together?"
The rings repel each other like the positive poles of two magnets. Barnes saw an opportunity where he thought he could tweak the chemistry by using radicals to overcome the hate between the two rings.
"We made these rings communicate and love each other under certain conditions, and once they were mechanically interlocked, the bond could not be broken," Barnes said.
Barnes' first strategy -- adding electrons to temporarily reduce the charge and bring the two rings together -- worked the first time he tried it. He, Stoddart and their colleagues started with a full ring and a half ring that they then closed up around the first ring (using some simple chemistry), creating the mechanical bond.
When the compound is oxidized and electrons lost, the strong positive forces come roaring back -- "It's hate on all the time," Barnes said -- but then it is too late for the rings to be parted. "That's the beauty of this system," he added.
Most organic radicals possess short lifetimes, but this unusual radical compound is stable in air and water. The compound tucks the electrons away inside the structure so they can't react with anything in the environment. The tight mechanical bond endures despite the unfavorable electrostatic interactions.
The two interlocked rings house an immense amount of charge in a mere cubic nanometer of space. The compound, a homo[2]catenane, can adopt one of six oxidation states and can accept up to eight electrons in total.
"Anything that accepts this many electrons has possibilities for batteries," Barnes said.
"Applications beckon," Stoddart agreed. "Now we need to spend more time with materials scientists and people who make devices to see how this amazing compound can be used."
