The activity was part of a ground blessing ceremony, led by SMWC President Dottie King, with a prayer and blessing given by Father Bernard LaMontagne, assistant professor of theology.

The ground blessing was an important part in beginning the process of building the sports and recreation center. The cost to construct the sports center is anticipated to be $11 million; the community has already raised approximately $6.5 million.

Duke Bennett, mayor of Terre Haute, participated in the celebration. ?There is nothing more important than God to bless this ground,? he said.

Other speakers included board of trustee members Sue and Wayne Hamilton and Marcia and Jerry Schmidt. Jeanne Knoerle, S.P., former SMWC president and co-chancellor of the College, also participated in the ceremony.

The sports and recreation center will be 36,000 square feet, with a regulation sized basketball court seating 1,000 people and a practice gym for intramural sports. It will provide up-to-date sports facilities within the community at SMWC.

One group especially looking forward to the center is the basketball team, which currently travels to a gym in Clinton for practices and home games.

Students will also appreciate the recreation center just as much. They will be able to have a competitive game of volleyball, run around the track, or participate in activities. The center will be on the west edge of campus, behind Rooney Library, next to the guest house.

Decline of Working Class Sport ? Gucci Little Piggy

Posted by C.R. on 10/23/2012

My interest in the prole/elite dynamic at Yankee Stadium and within professional sports in general led me to research on the working class roots of English professional soccer and the evolution of attending crowds (mentioned here by Steve Sailer):

Shouting for your team in a rickety, windswept stadium, then drinking a few pints in the club and conducting a post-mortem on defeat or reliving a famous victory: this was the essence of Saturday afternoons in small town England and Scotland for decades. It lasted until the nineteen sixties, when the television boom and off-course betting gave working men something else to do on a Saturday afternoon. The seventies saw a switch in family values which meant that the football match no longer figured top of the list of Saturday priorities for many men, and the hooligan explosion of the late seventies and eighties further cut back the numbers of those prepared to endure cold fingers, poor toilet facilities [sometimes none for women] and a barrage of foul language in order to shout for their local team. The recent resurgence in the numbers attending football matches has come about as a result of safer and more comfortable grounds and the almost total disappearance of the hooligan problem. It has also, however, signalled a shift in the social backgrounds of those attending. Along with an increase in the numbers of women at matches, there are notably more middle-income people attending, and most clubs now have family stands, where parents accompanying children can sit in reserved accommodation. This is, in many ways, a welcome change, and the image of football has had a facelift over the last three years which would have been unimaginable as recently as the crisis-ridden nineteen-eighties, which saw many lifelong football fans give up going to the game in the wake of the disasters at Heysel and Hillsborough, among others. It has also, however, taken football away from its working-class origins, and there are many in the North who feel that the game has been usurped by the middle-class entrepreneur. This perhaps accounts in some measure for the fact that many youngsters in Lancashire and Yorkshire have switched their allegiance to rugby league, the other great working-class pastime of northern England.

And later in the piece:

Although there was still a spirit of rational recreation in working-class sport, it had taken new directions by the end of the century. The combination of benevolence from a ?kindly? ruling class and a desire for an orderly and healthy workforce had led to initiatives from factory owners such as the provision of after-hours sports clubs for the men and, albeit rarely, organised day-trips to the seaside or to the country.

This reminds me of a conversation I had with a pro-union guy I met at a local Occupy Wall Street protest I was observing.? The guy, who was dressed up as Benjamin Franklin, theorized (a la ?Bowling Alone? though he didn?t mention the book) that bowling took off in the ?Golden Era? 1950s and 1960s as men who worked in factories and where naturally part of unions formed league teams in order to escape the toil of their jobs and the families that naturally followed from these jobs.? While bowling alleys of the working-class mold have mostly disappeared (the only bowling alleys that exist cater to kids with full arcades and ?cosmic bowling? specials and curbs and such; not like the old grease-monkey bowling alleys where the mechanical behind-the-scenes activities were front-and-center to the bowling experience), softball leagues have sprouted up in their place, probably because they can be played in public parks or recreational complexes rather than at places of business which have overhead i.e. electricity and labor costs.

For presidential candidates, image may trump debate issues, experts say

ScienceDaily (Oct. 24, 2012) ? The wide swings in debate performances by this year's presidential candidates reflect the fact that in modern campaigns, a candidate's image is the message, according to linguistic anthropologists who have studied presidential campaigns.

Candidates send important messages to voters through even their smallest gestures, the researchers say. For example, in this year's first debate, President Barack Obama often looked down at the podium and was criticized for appearing disengaged. In subsequent debates Obama directly addressed his Republican opponent, former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney, and increased the use of a hammering hand gesture sometimes called the "power grip."

Michael Lempert and Michael Silverstein explore the surprisingly important role of such personal touches in Creatures of Politics: Media, Message and the American Presidency, just published by the Indiana University Press. They conclude that U.S. presidential campaigns are all about a candidate's brand and celebrity, more than issues brought up at a debate.

"The message is an all-encompassing collage of impressions, including the image politicians project with their personal style and language and the visual images they use to communicate their approachability with the electorate. It's a form of branding," said Michael Silverstein, the Charles F. Grey Distinguished Service Professor in Anthropology, Linguistics and Psychology at the University of Chicago.

Candidates take their cues from celebrities who strategically construct and project images to appeal to the public and advance their careers. "In the way of contributing to the message, celebrity becomes a great asset in the realm of political life," Silverstein said.

Former President George W. Bush, famous for his trouble with language, could be perceived to have done well in the 2004 presidential debate with John Kerry, the researchers say. Bush used the way he spoke, rather than what he said, to create an image that attracted voters.

"Kerry was, ironically, viewed as being the more patrician, based on his grammar and elocution," Silverstein said. "And so he seemed like somebody who wasn't real. When you look at Bush's bloopers, they weren't really bloopers at all. They were deliberate efforts to seem real, like a regular person with whom the majority of the audience could identify."

Lempert and Silverstein see the public fascination with this "message" as a variation of the predatory voyeurism that characterizes our culture's obsession with celebrities. "It's really the 'TMZ-ization' of politics," said Lempert, assistant professor of anthropology at the University of Michigan. "We've become habituated to this. Basically, we've come to rely on the characterizations of candidates that this system has invented to help us make sense of which candidates we should support."

"As a society, we know that this is happening, and that it's now the norm," Silverstein said. "But we still feel a certain sense of discomfort that marketing techniques that used to be applied only to commodities are now taken for granted in the packaging of presidential contenders."

This discomfort is expressed by our calling for rational discussion of the issues and by commentators' questions about whether the candidates that we're seeing are "real" or "authentic," the researchers say.

"Electoral politics has always involved presenting a publicly imaginable character to the electorate," Lempert said. "But today's communications technologies and the rise of professional consultancy and political marketing have amplified the illusion to be real, or to be seen as being real.

"So we not only have debates, but endless debates about the debates. Rather than just being a chance to talk about the issues, the debates are also a form of theater that allows viewers to take the measure of the candidates, through their appearance, their pronunciation, their use of gestures, even their gaffes."

(AP) ? Police removed a bicycle Tuesday from a home near where a 12-year-old girl's body was found in a recycling bin, a case that has spread fear and worry through a town that had been desperately searching for her since she disappeared while on a ride through the neighborhood.

Authorities did not confirm the bike was the one belonging to Autumn Pasquale, but it matched the description of the white BMX she was seen riding Saturday afternoon before she disappeared. They also recovered a backpack they believe was hers.

Gloucester County Prosecutor Sean Dalton would not call the death a homicide and said there were no suspects. Autopsy results were pending.

But if someone is found responsible for the death of Autumn, who would have turned 13 next Monday, "they don't deserve to be walking the streets," he said at a news conference Tuesday.

Three teenage brothers live at the home where the bike and backpack were found, said two friends of the brothers, Na'eem Williams and Jodie Robinson, both 16. One of the teens in the home traded BMX bike parts, according to a young man, Corey Hewes, 19, who said he was among those who traded with him.

The house was a place where teens frequently hung out and had parties, some neighbors said.

Autumn's body was found around 10 p.m. Monday in the bin just blocks from her house and from Borough Hall, where thousands of people gathered earlier in the evening for a tearful candlelight vigil to pray for her safe return. It was not clear whether the bin was on the same property where the bike was recovered or on the adjacent lot of a vacant home.

"The search for Autumn is over," Dalton said Tuesday. He called Clayton a safe community but said parents should continue to keep close watch on their children.

The girl's great-uncle, Paul Spadofora, gathered with other relatives at the news conference to thank the community for its help in the search. The victim's parents did not attend.

"There's evil everywhere, even in the small town of Clayton," Spadofora said.

Crime scene investigators arrived shortly before 9 a.m. in the neighborhood where the body was found. Authorities did not say exactly where the recycling bin was found.

But Tuesday was trash collection day, and many residents had dragged their trash cans and recycling bins to the curb the night before. The covered recycling bins are collected by an automated truck that picks them up and dumps the contents into the back.

Police barricaded the block, and friends and neighbors came by to see. Some mothers said they were keeping their kids out of school for the day. Even before the body was found, students reported that Spirit Week had been canceled because of the sorrow.

One young man rode a bike up, sat on a porch of a home and cried, then biked away.

Clayton Mayor Thomas Bianco walked to the scene, cried, hugged a police officer and gave a brief statement to the gathered reporters.

"You hear about it in other places but never think it would happen in our little town," he said.

Howard Kowgill, 60, who lives in town and, like many, knows members of Autumn's family, said the discovery of the body changes the nature of the town.

"Until they find out who did it, you don't let your kids out," he said.

Autumn was last seen around 12:30 p.m. Saturday pedaling her bike away from the home where she lives with her father, her two siblings, her father's girlfriend and the girlfriend's children, authorities said.

Relatives said they believed she was heading to see a friend, and they became worried only after she did not return by her 8 p.m. curfew.

Sunday morning, her disappearance became not only a crisis but a town-wide cause in Clayton, a town 25 miles south of Philadelphia. Volunteers by the hundred joined the search, scouring malls, nearby towns and passing out fliers.

By Monday evening, officials were thanking the volunteers for their help but asking them to call it a night.

Hundreds of people returned Monday for the vigil. Spadofora, the great-uncle, said he hoped the town could gather again a week later, with Autumn back, with candles to mark her birthday.

Study: No anti-Semitism, anti-Israel push at most college campuses

WASHINGTON (JTA) ? Ninety-seven percent of U.S. and Canadian college campuses report no anti-Israel or?anti-Semitic events, and the campus-based anti-Israel divestment effort has failed, according to a new study.

The American-Israeli Cooperative Enterprise released the findings of its new study, ?Israel and the Campus: The Real Story,? on Tuesday. Mitchell Bard, the AICE?s executive director, and Jeff Dawson, the private organization?s campus liaison, authored the report.?

Student Jewish groups are beating back such efforts, according to the authors, because of professional guidance provided by campus Hillels and numerous other Jewish organizations, while the anti-Israel efforts are largely student-led.?

Bard and Dawson tracked 674 anti-Israel events at 108 U.S. and Canadian universities during the 2011-12 academic year. One-third of the incidents took place on 10 campuses; four were in the University of California system. Several of the campuses, the report said, have strong pro-Israel groups and cannot be characterized as "hostile toward Israel.? ?

Two anti-Israel groups -- the Muslim Students Association and Students for Justice in Palestine -- were responsible for most of the episodes.

While two American universities did adopt divestment resolutions as part of the anti-Israel boycott, sanctions and divestment campaign, several others were defeated. No?American university has divested from Israel and prominent campus presidents have said they would oppose such efforts.

?Rather than weaken the relationship between U.S. colleges and Israel, the BDS movement has largely backfired and ties are stronger than ever and continue to grow,? the authors wrote.?

The report also said that while a 2011 AICE survey with The Israel Project found that ?a shocking 78 percent of Jewish students reported witnessing or personally being subjected to anti-Semitism,? the new report found the figure ?inconsistent? with their findings. They noted that a recent survey by the Institute for Jewish & Community Research found that 43 percent of Jewish students saw anti-Semitism as a problem -- ?a significantly lower, but still a disturbing figure.?

Recommendations in the new report include teaching about Israel ?warts and all,? so that students can confidently discuss its complex environment; creating Taglit-Birthright Israel trips for high school students modeled on the popular free 10-day trip for those aged 18-26; and building more long-distance learning programs between Israeli and American Jewish students.

Lubricants from vegetable oil

Epoxides are highly reactive organic compounds comprised of a triple ring with two carbon atoms and one oxygen atom. Among other things, the chemicals industry uses them for the production of lubricants for vehicles and engines, as well as surfactants and emulsifiers for detergents and cleansers. Until now, epoxides have been based primarily on source materials procured from petroleum. Researchers at the Fraunhofer Institute for Interfacial Engineering and Biotechnology IGB have engineered a chemical-enzymatic process that now enables vegetable oil-based production, at lower temperatures and under more environmentally-friendly conditions.

The Fraunhofer Center for Chemical-Biotechnological Processes CBP in Leuna has made this technology ready for industrial application. Starting October 2012, the findings obtained in the laboratory will be scaled up to an even larger volume. Quantities of up to 100 liters will be possible at the new center. That corresponds to a 70 kilogram-batch of epoxides. In the laboratory this reaction yielded batches only in the grams range. The 14 partners in the "Integrated BioProduction" project will be working until April 2014 on engineering a process for procuring epoxides, made from domestic vegetable oils, for industry use.

Using by-products from the food industry

The foods that are suitable for epoxides production include, for example, the oils of mustard, elder seed, crambe (Abyssinian cabbage) and dragonhead. To some extent, these oils emerge from food production as by-products, but are not themselves used as food. The epoxide is procured in Leuna from fluid oils, or fatty acids as well, with the aid of chemical-enzymatic epoxidation. In contrast to the established, pure chemical variety, the enzyme lipase here catalyzes peracid, the epoxidation medium. The main benefits are that the enzyme is easier and more efficient to handle. In comparison to many other chemical reactions, they operate at moderate temperatures, at neutral pH values and under normal pressure. At the same time, the enzymes conduct the epoxidation only on the designated sites in the molecule, and without side reactions.

"Even if the petrochemical process can never be completely replaced the potential for sustainable raw materials in the chemicals industry is immense. In 2009, roughly 14 million tons of vegetable oil was used for chemical-technical products, compared to about 400 million tons of mineral oil in the same year. To reduce the dependence on petroleum and carve out potential savings in CO2 equivalents, the industry needs ultramodern biorefineries. In Leuna, we are creating just the right processes for this," explains Dr. Katja Patzsch, group manager for biotechnological processes at CBP.

The "Integrated BioProduction" project

The project "Integrated BioProduction" is sponsored by the German Federal Ministry of Food, Agriculture and Consumer Protection BMELV. The spotlight of the research activities is on increasing the use of sustainable raw materials primarily domestic plant-based oils for production of synthetic components for the chemical industry. In the first phase, which ends April 2012, the researchers selected and evaluated relevant plant oils, developed and tested chemical and biotechnological conversion processes on the laboratory scale, and identified suitable catalysts. In the second phase, scheduled until 2014, the focus shifts to optimization and the adjusting selected processes to a scale that is relevant to industry; here, the Fraunhofer Center CBP acts as the interface. Starting October 2012, the large-scale facilities and processes will be tested in conjunction with project partners Addinol Lube Oil GmbH, Dracosa AG, DHW Deutsche Hydrierwerke GmbH Rodleben, Taminco GmbH, Umicore AG & Co. KG, Linde Engineering Dresden GmbH, Eucodis Bioscience GmbH, Thringer Landesanstalt fr Landwirtschaft (Agricultural Institute for the State of Thringen), InfraLeuna GmbH, Martin Luther University Halle-Wittenberg, the Fraunhofer Institute for Interfacial Engineering and Biotechnology IGB, the Fraunhofer Institute for Chemical Technology ICT and the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology KIT.

You Can't Spank a Fish ? Or Why God Gave Us Free Will ? The ...

Hand of God

picture via: Daily Meditations with Fr. Alfonse

I woke up early because of some annoying racket and did something stupid so I?ve decided to wax philosophical to make up for it. I determined that our cat was batting at our door demanding that we get up and feed him, water him, stroke his royal fur, or whatever his highness?s desire happens to be.

We have, by the way, the noisiest cat ever to roam the earth. Living with a nervous Rottweiler would be more peaceful. ?I burst out the door and swatted at him with my house slipper determined to have some quiet. He ran away to hide and that?s when I realized that he wasn?t making the noise.

Feeling a little guilty, I crawled under the coffee table to apologize to the cat and not knowing what else to do I staggered into the kitchen to make coffee. Waiting for it to brew I looked out the kitchen window and saw 8 to 10 guys walking around in the trees. Closer inspection revealed that they were walking around on the roof of the house across the alley replacing the entire roof. What an unholy racket. If we ever have our roof redone I?m leaving town for the duration.

Drinking coffee my I started thinking about the people who are in the ?positive reinforcement only, never yell, scold or punish? theory of raising children, pets, or dealing with adult humans. ?It?s a good theory but doesn?t always work in the wild. If you see the your child or pet has toddled into the street do you yell at them to get their butt out of the street this very minute or run in the house to find a treat to lure them out of the street? I tend to be in the yell first and cuddle later camp. Maybe I was Genghis Khan in another life, who knows?

Then I thought back to the 50 gallon fish tank I had years ago. It was supposed to be a community tank where all the little fishes love each other and get along. You have to do a lot of research to figure out which fish get along in community tanks without eating their neighbor?s children or biting their fins off. Some fish like to hang at the top of the tank and others prefer to hang out on the bottom, some in the middle, etc.

It worked out fine until I made the mistake of putting an angel fish in the tank. This damn fish was pretty, but what a bully. He constantly roamed the tank chasing the other fish, loved to nip the fins of the fantail guppies and just in general causing a ruckus in the formerly peaceful community. I asked some experts and was told that I may need to isolate him from the community tank. So now I?m supposed to put a fish in jail?

One day I got exasperated and stuck my hand in the tank and touched the angel fish with my finger and chased him all around the tank wiggling my fingers. He stopped terrorizing the other fish. That seemed to work for about a week and then he started up the bully tactics again so I chased him around the tank with my hand again. He stopped again. About a week later I came in one morning and he was on the floor dead. He jumped out of the tank and committed fishy suicide.

I was horrified and heartbroken. What kind of fiend drives a fish crazy? One like me, evidently.? I started the whole thing by trying to force the fish to live in a community tank after being warned he was a predator. I thought, in my omnipotence, that I could make it work. ?Later that week I was having drinks on my balcony with a friend and told her the sad tale. She burst out laughing and spit my fine boxed wine all over the patio furniture. I asked her what was so damned funny. She finally managed to gasp between gales of laughter, ?only you would try to spank a fish!? ?I beg your pardon.

Well she kept laughing and after thinking about it I started wondering what would happen if the giant hand of God came down and tried to stop with me from doing what I wanted to do. Hey, wait a minute, I?ve read about that in the bible. Look what happened when God tries to force his humans into behaving like humans. All those floods, plaques, rivers of blood, lightning bolts, pillars of fire; people freaked the hell out, that?s what happens. And the resulting forced change is always temporary. ?It?s no wonder he threw up his hands and declared that we have free will.

Google's Android event: 'Nexus 4,' 'Nexus 10' and more Nexus

38 min.

Google's got an Android?event scheduled for Oct. 29, about a year following the announcement of the Galaxy Nexus smartphone and Android 4.0 (better known as Ice Cream Sandwich). As with every event of this magnitude, there's a host of rumors about what might be announced. Here are the best ones:

Nexus 4
Based on photos posted to Google+ by LG and Google employees, the next Google Nexus smartphone will be made by LG and called the Nexus 4.?Given that the Nexus 7 is a 7-inch tablet, we could assume that the Nexus 4 will be a 4-inch device.

The Next Web's Matt Brian says that a "source with knowledge of Google's plans" claims that the Nexus 4 will have a quad-core 1.5 GHz ?processor, 2GB RAM, 16GB storage, an 8-megapixel rear-facing camera (and 1.3-megapixel front-facing camera). According to this individual, the device will have a?a?4.7-inch display with a?1280 x 768 pixel resolution. (If that's the case, we wonder why Google didn't round up and dub the device the Nexus 5.)

Like prior Nexus devices, the Nexus 4 is expected to be among the first to run Google's latest and greatest mobile operating system, Android 4.2.

Nexus 7
The Nexus 7 has been around since late June, after being announced during Google I/O, and Google's giving it extra attention nonetheless. According to multiple reports, the tablet will now come in two 32GB versions, ?one of which will offer HSPA+ connectivity.?

Nexus 10
Google and Samsung have been working together on a 10-inch tablet, writes the Next Web's Matt Brian. This tablet will supposedly be dubbed the Nexus 10 and offer a higher resolution display than the third-generation iPad, as previously suggested by analysts.

Android 4.2
Google is expected to show off Android 4.2 during the Oct. 29 event and, according to the Next Web's Matt?Brian, this latest version of Google's mobile operating system is expected to compete directly with Apple's iOS 6 (though that's pretty much a given). Brian's mystery source says that Android 4.2 will offer new panoramic camera features, a way to access Play Store content from a widget, and multi-user support for tablets.

Tigers' D holds off Manziel, A&M

COLLEGE STATION, Texas (AP) ? LSU's play-making defense saved the Tigers again.

Jeremy Hill rushed for a career-high 127 yards and a touchdown, and the sixth-ranked Tigers rallied from an early deficit to beat No. 20 Texas A&M 24-19 at Kyle Field on Saturday.

Michael Ford also had a touchdown run and Zach Mettenberger threw a TD pass to Kadron Boone for the Tigers (7-1, 3-1 Southeastern Conference), who scored 21 points off four Texas A&M turnovers.

A&M (5-2, 2-2) outplayed the Tigers for much of the first half and led 12-0, LSU's largest deficit since the national championship game against Alabama in January. But the Aggies gave away two costly turnovers just before halftime, and Boone's diving catch in the end zone with 11 seconds left put LSU up 14-12 at the break. Hill finished off A&M with a 47-yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter.

Johnny Manziel, A&M's dual-threat redshirt freshman quarterback, completed 29 of 56 passes for 276 yards, but threw three interceptions and was sacked three times. He was the SEC's leading rusher coming into the game and was held to 27 yards on 17 carries.

A&M started strong, though, moving the ball easily on its opening drive and taking a 6-0 lead on Christine Michael's short touchdown run. LSU hadn't given up a first-quarter score in four games.

LSU went three-and-out on its initial series, and the defense looked a step slow again when A&M got the ball back. Manziel got plenty of protection from the Aggies' offensive line and threaded a 21-yard pass to Mike Evans for a first down at the LSU 34. Taylor Bertolet kicked a 32-yard field goal to put A&M up 9-0.

LSU's defense generated better pressure on Manziel as the half wore on. The Tigers, meanwhile, sputtered for most of the half against the same Aggies' defense that gave up 615 yards in last week's 59-57 win at Louisiana Tech.

The LSU offense got the kick-start it needed when freshman cornerback Jalen Collins intercepted Manziel at the LSU 39. Ford gained 13 yards on a fourth-and-1, then raced 20 yards down the sideline for the Tigers' first touchdown with 1:49 left before halftime.

Ben Malena fumbled at the A&M 41 with just over a minute left in the half. The Aggies looked as if they might escape, but Boone made a diving, over-the-shoulder catch in the end zone with 11 seconds remaining.

Mettenberger went 5-for-16 and the Tigers mustered only 147 yards in the first half. The Aggies amassed 256 yards in the first half ? 45 more yards than LSU allowed against South Carolina last week.

LSU started a drive early in the fourth quarter with eight straight running plays, gaining at least five yards on seven of them. Hill ran 18 yards up the middle to the A&M 9 before Jarvis Landry lost yardage on a pass by Mettenberger toward the sideline, and Drew Alleman's 28-yard field goal put LSU up 17-12 with 8:35 remaining.

Trey Williams returned the ensuing kickoff 76 yards to the LSU 16. Linebacker Kevin Minter nearly sacked Manziel on second down and Manziel's throw to Uzoma Nwachukwu fell incomplete on third down. Bertolet shanked a 33-yard attempt and LSU regained possession with 7:28 left.

LSU junior cornerback Tharold Simon put it away when he intercepted Manziel's pass and returned it to the A&M 46. Hill then burst up the middle and sprinted to the end zone, going over 100 yards for the second straight week. He rushed for a career-high 124 yards against South Carolina last week.

Malena finished a quick A&M drive with a 5-yard touchdown run with 1:17 left. But Odell Beckham, Jr. cleanly fielded the onside kick, and the Tigers held on.

The announced attendance was 87,429, the fifth largest crowd in Kyle Field history. The Tigers and Aggies were meeting for the 51st time ? they played each other from 1960-75 and from 1986-95 before the series was discontinued. LSU beat Texas A&M 41-24 in the Cotton Bowl after the 2010 season.

Plant-based foods may offer reduced risk for aggressive prostate cancer

ScienceDaily (Oct. 19, 2012) ? President George W. Bush made no secret that he detested broccoli. With all due respect to our former leader, researchers have found one more great reason to add fruits, vegetables, herbs and tea to your diet.

A study by Susan Steck of the Arnold School of Public Health finds that a high intake of flavonoids, a group of compounds found in plants, may lower the risk for highly aggressive prostate cancer.

"Incorporating more plant-based foods and beverages, such as fruits, vegetables, herbs and tea, into the diet may offer some protection against aggressive prostate cancer," said Steck, an associate professor at the Arnold School and an affiliated scholar with the Center for Research in Health Disparities.

"Filling your plate with flavonoid-rich foods is one behavior that can be changed to have a beneficial impact on health," she said.

Steck presented her findings at the International Conference on Frontiers in Cancer Prevention Research. The annual event is sponsored by the American Association for Cancer Research, whose mission is to prevent and cure cancer through research, education, communication and collaboration.

Prior preclinical studies have shown that flavonoids have beneficial effects against prostate cancer, but few studies have examined the effect of flavonoids on prostate cancer in humans.

Steck and her colleagues used data from 920 African-American men and 977 white men in the North Carolina-Louisiana Prostate Cancer Project who were newly diagnosed with prostate cancer. Participants completed a self-reported dietary history questionnaire to assess flavonoid intake, which was measured using the U.S. Department of Agriculture's 2011 Database for the Flavonoid Content of Selected Foods.

Men with the highest total intake of flavonoids had a 25 percent lower risk for aggressive prostate cancer compared with those men with the lowest flavonoid intake.

"We found that higher total flavonoid intake was associated with reduced odds for aggressive prostate cancer in both African-American and European-American men, but no individual subclass of flavonoids appeared to be protective independently, suggesting that it is important to consume a variety of plant-based foods in the diet, rather than to focus on one specific type of flavonoid or flavonoid-rich food," Steck said.

In addition, the risk for aggressive prostate cancer was even lower in those men younger than 65 and in current smokers with the highest levels of flavonoid intake. Dietary questionnaire results revealed that citrus fruits and juices, such as oranges and grapefruits, tea, grapes, strawberries, onions and cooked greens were the top contributors to total flavonoid intake among the participants. "The results support public health recommendations and guidelines from organizations such as the American Institute for Cancer Research to consume a more plant-based diet," Steck said. "In particular, consuming more flavonoid-rich foods may be beneficial for those people who are at increased risk for cancer, such as smokers."

Internet Marketing on a Budget - PDF

Internet Marketing on a Budget
Businesses seeking increased traffic to their websites and social media
profiles can hire an SEO expert to review and revamp their current
pages. While this is sure to pay off in the long run, it can come at a steep
cost. Fortunately, there are many ways for web marketers to increase
their search rankings without spending any money whatsoever.

Here are three excellent methods to improve your web presence and
drive inbound leads at no cost.
1. List your business in free business directories.
Business directories are an excellent vehicle to promote your business
because they are already optimized to show up high in web searches.
Any links you receive from these directories will have a greater weight,
due to the elevated Google PageRank that the directories enjoy.
Reputable directories include Thumbtack, Merchant Circle, and Contact
Squid.
Website: http://www.contactsquid.com/
Email: blake@blaremedia.net

Internet Marketing on a Budget

Of these, the Contact Squid free business directory probably offers the
most internet marketing "oomph" thanks to built-in Facebook and
Twitter feeds as well as the ability to optimize your profile page for the
search engines.
When submitting to directories, make each separate profile unique.
Write up a good description of your business using the keywords you
want to rank highly for. Take advantage of any additional media the
directories allow you to upload, such as pictures and videos.
2. Produce as many backlinks possible yourself.
Backlinks are simply links on websites around the `net that point back to
your page. They are one of the most important components in search
engine optimization, so time spent getting backlinks to your site is time
very well spent.
Sign up for accounts on bookmarking sites such as Digg, Stumbleupon,
etc. and submit your websites and your business directory pages to them.
Also, Tweet, +1, and "like" the pages as well, including the URLs with
your posts.
3. Optimize your actual links and URLs
Website: http://www.contactsquid.com/
Email: blake@blaremedia.net

Internet Marketing on a Budget
The last tip for free do-it-yourself internet marketing is to optimize your
URLs and links. First, place keywords in the URLs themselves. If you are
trying to rank for "Fresno Jewelry," then the URL for your bridal
jewelry-based page should be something like
"http://www.contactsquid.com/The-Vault-Jewelry/Fresno-
Entertainment/126".
Next, when submitting links around the web, it is better to place
keywords in the anchor text instead of your URL when allowed. Anchor
text consists of the words that make up a hyperlink. Taking our bridal
jewelry page example, the anchor text should appear as "Fresno Bridal
Jewelry" instead of "http://www.contactsquid.com/fresnobridaljewelry."
In addition to linking to your main website, make sure you also place
some links pointing to your directory profile pages as well.
Following the tips in this article will give you a very good fighting
chance among the thousands of other businesses in your industry
competing for search engine rankings. The results will make you very
glad you invested all the time and effort to do it right.
