(AP) ? The mystery surrounding the man behind the crudely produced anti-Islamic video that sparked violence in the Middle East deepened when he appeared in court and identified himself by yet another name.

Arrested on Thursday in Los Angeles after authorities said he violated his probation from a 2010 check fraud conviction, Nakoula Basseley Nakoula told a judge his real name was Mark Basseley Youssef. He said he had been using that name since 2002, even though he went by Nakoula in his fraud case.

Court documents filed in Orange County Superior Court show he was granted a name change petition in 2002 and legally changed his name to Mark Basseley Youssef because "Nakoula is a girl's name and it cause me troubles."

On Friday, federal prosecutors said court documents will now reflect Youssef's real name. Assistant U.S. Attorney Robert Dugdale said Youssef didn't give that name when he was charged two years ago. Also, he had a driver's license under Nakoula, authorities said.

"He did not provide his true legal name at the time of prosecution," Dugdale said.

The full story about Youssef and the video "Innocence of Muslims" still isn't known more than two weeks after violence erupted in Egypt and elsewhere in the Arab world where at least 50 people have died in protests related to the film.

Citing a lengthy pattern of deception and the potential to flee, U.S. Central District Chief Magistrate Judge Suzanne Segal ordered Youssef to remain in prison without bond until another judge can hold a hearing to determine if he broke the terms of his probation.

"The court has a lack of trust in this defendant at this time," Segal said.

Prosecutors noted Youssef had eight probation violations, including lying to his probation officers and using aliases. He could face new charges that carry a maximum two-year prison term.

After his 2010 conviction, Youssef was sentenced to 21 months in prison and was barred from using computers or the Internet for five years without approval from his probation officer, though prosecutors said none of the violations involved the Internet. He also wasn't supposed to use any name other than his true legal name without the prior written approval of his probation officer.

Three names, however, have been associated with Youssef this month alone.

The movie was made last year by a man who called himself Sam Bacile. After the violence erupted, a man who identified himself as Bacile spoke to media outlets including The Associated Press, took credit for the film and said it was meant to portray the truth about Muhammad and Islam, which he called a cancer.

The next day, the AP determined there was no Bacile and linked the identity to Nakoula Nakoula, a former gas station owner with a drug conviction and a history of using aliases. Federal authorities later confirmed there was no Bacile and that Nakoula was behind the movie.

Some of the false statements in Youssef's alleged probation violations had to do with the film, Dugdale said. Youssef told probation officials his role was just writing the script, and denied going by the name Sam Bacile in connection with the film, Dugdale said.

Before going into hiding, Youssef acknowledged to the AP that he was involved with the film but said he only worked on logistics and management.

Youssef, a Christian originally from Egypt, then went into hiding after he was identified as the man behind the trailer, which depicts Muhammad as a womanizer, religious fraud and child molester. He met with federal probation officials two weeks ago, was led out of his home in suburban Cerritos in the middle of the night, flanked by Los Angeles County sheriff's deputies and cloaked in heavy clothing to protect his identity.

Youssef came out of hiding Thursday for his court appearance, although the news media were banned from the courtroom and reporters had to watch the proceedings on a TV in a nearby courthouse. No photos were allowed.

Youssef wore beige pants and a collared shirt when he was led into the courtroom handcuffed and shackled. He appeared relaxed, smiling at one point before the hearing and conferring with his attorney.

Youssef's attorney, Steven Seiden, sought to have the hearing closed and his client released on $10,000 bail. He argued Youssef has checked in with his probation officer frequently and made no attempts to leave Southern California.

Seiden was concerned that Youssef would be in danger in federal prison because of Muslim inmates, but prosecutors said he likely would be placed in protective custody.

Lawrence Rosenthal, a constitutional and criminal law professor at Chapman University School of Law in Orange, said it was "highly unusual" for a judge to order immediate detention on a probation violation for a nonviolent crime, but if there were questions about Youssef's identity it was more likely.

"When the prosecution doesn't really know who they're dealing with, it's much easier to talk about flight," Rosenthal said. "I've prosecuted individuals who'd never given a real address. You don't know who you're dealing with, and you're just going to have very limited confidence about their ability to show up in court."

Enraged Muslims have demanded punishment for Youssef, and a Pakistani cabinet minister has offered a $100,000 bounty to anyone who kills him.

First Amendment advocates have defended Youssef's right to make the film while condemning its content. Federal officials likely will face criticism from those who say Youssef's free speech rights were trampled by his arrest on a probation violation.

In arguing that Youssef is a possible flight risk, Dugdale said Youssef couldn't even reveal something as fundamental as his real name.

"He's a person who simply can't be trusted," he said.

Risk Measurement Models | Enterprise Risk Management | FRM Exam

by Maria on September 27, 2012 in Course Preparation, Financial Management, FRM? Part 1

Risk is one of the major concerns for every firm. The increasing amount of risks in today?s market has increased the demand for risk measurement models and risk management tools by the day. Let?s have a look at some of the popular risk measurement models used in Enterprise Risk Management in this post.

There are two major models of risk measurement that are applied widely across firms within the space of Enterprise Risk Management; namely stated below.

  • Structural Models
  • Probabilistic Models

Structural Models: Structural Models are also referred as Deterministic Models as within these, clear cause and effect is defined. The outcomes are expected and probability of non-expected outcomes is not considered. For example, the rise in the interest rate will determine the revenue growth.

Probabilistic Models: Probabilistic Models also referred as Stochastic Models use observations to parametrize the data. These parameters are used in analytic models such as measurement of variance, correlations, etc. At times, one can also directly use the observations in a simulation such as the Monte Carlo simulation. These simulation techniques require several iterations and high computational power.

Besides these basic models, there are also various tools that are used in the risk management at a firm level. These tools are namely:

  • Capital management
  • Performance measurement
  • Investment strategy
  • Crisis management
  • Contingency planning
  • Business expansion strategy
  • Distribution channel strategy
  • Strategic planning

These are the major models and tools used in Enterprise Risk Management. To know more about risk measures and risk management, you can explore our training courses on Financial Risk Manager exam preparation. Simplilearn offers both online and classroom training courses on FRM Part 1 Exam prep.

AUTOS: Jaguar Launches The F-Type

AUTOS: Jaguar Launches The F-Type

The long-awaited sports car ? spiritual successor to the fabled E-Type ? debuts prior to the Paris Auto Show.

You've seen it in countless spy photos and even a leaked press shot, but the 2014 Jaguar F-Type sports car was finally unveiled today officially at the Rodin Museum in Paris ahead of the Paris Auto Show, which opens Thursday.

Designer Ian Callum, charged with creating a successor to the hallowed E-type, has penned an unmistakably British roadster that channels elements of the E without succumbing to the temptation to create an actual retro design.

The F-Type was tasked with reviving the energy of the famed E-Type without being retro. (Photo: Jaguar) Jaguar executives remain mum on pricing for the moment, but it's clear they're determined to offer potential Boxster buyers a compelling alternative. The engineers have done their part too: Depending upon trim level, the output and estimated performance of the F-Type lines up closely with Porsche's entry-level convertible.

Let's take a look at the specifics:

All three F-Type trim levels get supercharged engines, either a V6 available in two states of tune or the company's exquisite force-fed 5-liter AJ V8. The 375-horsepower V6 is notable by virtue of having the highest specific output of any Jaguar engine to-date.

The horsepower ratings and Jaguar?s performance figures:

? F-Type: Supercharged 3.0L V6, 335 horsepower, 0-60 5.1 seconds, top speed 161 mph.

? F-Type S: Supercharged 3.0L V6, 375 horsepower, 0-60 4.8 seconds, top speed 171 mph.

? F-Type V8S: Supercharged 5.0L V8, 488 horsepower, 0-60 4.2 seconds, top speed 186 mph.

There will be three versions of F-Type, two with supercharged V6 engines and a top model powered by Jaguar's 5-liter supercharged V8. (Photo: Jaguar) F-Type spotters can identify V6 models by their dual center-mounted exhaust pipes versus the V8's quad pipes, arranged two per side.

Each F-Type gets a ZF eight-speed automatic transmission with QuickShift, a strategy that cuts fuel when changing gears for faster shifts. S models also get launch control. V6S models get a mechanical limited slip differential, while V8S trims receive an electronic differential that maximizes traction not just in performance situations, but also in inclement weather.

While we suspect the V8 will thrill thanks to its additional 150 horsepower, Jaguar claims the base V6 F-Type is less than one second slower to 60 than its big brother:

Fact Checkers Unite to Predict Debate Deceptions

President Obama and Mitt Romney are still hundreds of miles from the debate stage, but fact checkers are already poised and ready to dissect the half-truths that, if the past 15 months of campaigning are any indication, the presidential candidates are likely to fling at each other during the first presidential debate Oct. 3.

The top fact checkers from Politifact, FactCheck.org, The Washington Post's Fact Checker blog and The Associated Press are putting their heads together this week to root out the less-than-factual lines President Obama and Mitt Romney are likely to spin. The four groups will forecast these debate deceptions during a panel at the Press Club in Washington, D.C., Wednesday.

"In an age where the typical citizen is subjected to an avalanche of the kind of pure baloney that journalists used to keep out of the public discourse ? they are looking for journalists to be kind of adjudicators or referees," said FactCheck.org Director Brooks Jackson. "That's what we try to do."

While FactCheck.org, a subsidiary of the University of Pennsylvania's Annenberg Public Policy, does not issue true or false ratings, Obama has already tallied six "pants on fire" rulings from Politifact and Romney has chalked up ten "4 Pinocchio's" ratings from the Washington Post' Fact Checker.

Glen Kessler, who writes the Post's Fact Checker blog, said one of the biggest falsehoods that Romney continues to reiterate is that Obama has "apologized for America." Kessler gave that statement 4 Pinocchios, the least-factual rating, noting that the president never used "a word at all similar to 'apologize.'"

Kessler said one of Obama's favorite half-truths is saying that vice presidential candidate Paul Ryan's Medicare plan will make seniors "pay nearly $6,400 more for Medicare than they do today." That statement got 2 Pinnochios, because it relies on a previous version of Ryan's budget plan.

But while fact checks like these have become more common this election cycle - Kessler has put out 138 so far on Obama and Romney alone - that increase may have do more to with the public's "hunger" for truth than an uptick in the number of campaign lies, Kessler said.

"I've been covering politics for a long time, and I always maintain that politicians will always stretch the truth if they think it's in their political interest," he said. "But I do think there is a hunger out there from readers and viewers. There's a lot more skepticism out there."

And with the deluge of news from cable TV, blogs and tweets, Jackson from FactCheck.org said fact checkers are needed more than ever before to "marshal the evidence."

"The public's problem is not that they are not getting enough information, it's they are getting too much of it," Jackson said. "They need help sorting through all this stuff."

As Romney and Obama take the debate stage next Wednesday, ABC News will join the fact-checking fray to decipher the true statements from the deceptive lines. You can find those fact checks HERE.

Iran readies domestic Internet, blocks Google

15 hrs.

DUBAI ??Iran plans to switch its citizens onto a domestic Internet network in what officials say is a bid to improve cyber security but which many Iranians fear is the latest way to control their access to the web.

The announcement, made by a government deputy minister on Sunday, came as state television announced Google Inc's search engine and its email service would be blocked "within a few hours".

"Google and Gmail will be filtered throughout the country until further notice," an official identified only by his last name, Khoramabadi, said, without giving further details.

The Iranian Students' News Agency (ISNA) said Google ban was connected to the anti-Islamic film posted on the company's YouTube site which has caused outrage throughout the Muslim world. There was no official confirmation.

Iran has one of the biggest Internet filters of any country in the world, preventing normal Iranians from accessing countless sites on the official grounds they are offensive or criminal.

But many Iranians believe the block on sites such as Facebook and YouTube is due to their use in anti-government protests after the disputed re-election of President Mahmoud Ahamdinejad in 2009.

Sites expressing views considered anti-government are also routinely blocked.

Iranians commonly overcome the government filter by using virtual private network (VPN) software that makes the computer appear as if it is based in another country.

But officials have long spoken of creating an Iranian Internet system which would be largely isolated from the World Wide Web.

"In recent days, all governmental agencies and offices ... have been connected to the national information network," deputy communications and technology minister Ali Hakim-Javadi was quoted as saying by the Mehr news agency.

The second phase of the plan would be to connect ordinary Iranians to the national network, he said.

According to Iranian media, the domestic system would be fully implemented by March 2013 but it was not clear whether access to the global Internet would be cut once the Iranian system is rolled out.

Even using VPNs, many Iranians suffered serious problems accessing email and social networking sites in February, ahead of parliamentary elections.

The Islamic Republic tightened cyber security after its nuclear program was attacked in 2010 by the Stuxnet computer worm, which caused centrifuges to fail at its main uranium enrichment facility.

Tehran, whose nuclear programme is suspected by the West of being aimed at developing a bomb, accused the United States and Israel of deploying the worm.

Authorities said in April a computer virus was detected inside the control systems of Kharg Island - which handles the vast majority of Iran's crude oil exports - but the terminal remained operational.

Communications and Technology Minister Reza Taqipour said last month Iran needed to develop its own network to ensure the safety of the country's information.

"Control over the Internet should not be in the hands of one or two countries," he said. "Especially on major issues and during crises, one cannot trust this network at all."

Iran threatened in May to take legal action against Google over its decision to drop the term "Persian Gulf" from its Google Maps and leaving the waterway between Iran and the Arabian peninsula nameless.

Many Arab states refer to the sea as the "Arabian Gulf", a term Iran considers unacceptable.

Condolences pour in for 6-day-old panda cub

WASHINGTON (AP) ? As condolences poured in from around the world, National Zoo officials waited Monday for word on why a 6-day-old panda cub died and lamented a heartbreaking setback to their closely watched breeding program.

The cub had liver abnormalities and fluid in its abdomen, but a cause of death will not be known until full necropsy results are available within two weeks.

The cub, believed to be female, died Sunday morning, less than a week after its birth surprised and delighted zoo officials and visitors. Zookeepers had all but given up on the panda mother's chances of conceiving after six years of failed attempts.

"Every loss is hard," National Zoo director Dennis Kelly said. "This one is especially devastating."

This much is known: The cub appeared to be in good condition. It had been drinking its mother's milk. And it wasn't accidentally crushed to death by its mother, which has happened to other panda cubs in captivity. At birth, the cubs are hairless, their eyes are closed and they're about the size of a stick of butter. Their mothers weigh about 1,000 times more.

Native to China, giant pandas have long been the face of the movement to preserve endangered species. A few thousand are believed to remain in the wild, and there are a few hundred in captivity.

Four American zoos have pandas, and several cubs have been born in the U.S., but the bears at the National Zoo are treated like royalty. The zoo was given its first set of pandas in 1972 as a gift from China to commemorate President Richard Nixon's historic visit to the country.

Thousands of people had watched an online video feed of the cub's mother, 14-year-old Mei Xiang, hoping to catch a glimpse of the newborn during its few days of life. Fans from around the country and the world shared their sympathy on social media sites, and many said they shared an emotional connection with the burly, black-and-white bear.

Since the cub's death, Mei Xiang has started eating and interacting with her keepers again. She slept Sunday night while cradling a plastic toy in an apparent show of maternal instinct, Kelly said.

Kelly Parsons of Alexandria, Va., who brought her two young sons to see the pandas Monday, said she felt for Mei Xiang.

"It sounds like the mom is in mourning. Whether you're a parent to an animal or a human being, it's just so sad, the loss of a child," she said.

Suzan Murray, the zoo's chief veterinarian, cautioned that while it may appear the panda is grieving as she cradles the toy, Mei Xiang is a wild animal and her thoughts and emotions are not well understood.

Mei Xiang's only cub, a male named Tai Shan, was born in 2005 and became the zoo's star attraction before he was returned to China in 2010. Since his birth, there had been five unsuccessful attempts to impregnate Mei Xiang, and zoo officials had considered swapping her and her male partner, Tian Tian, for another pair.

Zoo officials said they're focused on Mei Xiang's health but didn't rule out trying to breed her again. At 14, she may have a few more years of fertility remaining. The oldest panda known to have given birth in captivity was 19; pandas can live to their mid-30s.

The mortality rate for panda cubs in the wild is unknown, but in captivity, 26 percent of males and 20 percent of females die in their first year. The zoo's first panda couple, Ling Ling and Hsing Hsing, had five cubs during the 1980s, but none lived more than a few days.

The new cub's liver, about the size of a kidney bean, was harder than usual and discolored, Murray said. The fluid in the cub's abdomen was unusual and could have been a symptom of the liver problem, she said.

There was no evidence of fluid in the cub's lungs, which would suggest pneumonia.

Because Mei Xiang's other cub survived and she appeared to be taking good care of the newborn, zoo officials had been cautiously optimistic. Kelly said he was not aware of anything that could have been done to improve the cub's chances of survival.

The staff was taking the death especially hard because of the work they'd put in over the past six years to produce another cub, Kelly said.

Antennas Direct | The growing popularity of Web TV

If anyone needed any convincing about the power of web TV, the recent news that YouTube now serves more search queries than the Yahoo and Live search engines has certainly emphasised the point. Moreover, this reflects the continuing dominance of Google, which owns the video streaming site.

In November, YouTube received 2.79 billion search queries, more than the 2.62 billion searches registered on Yahoo and the 1.05 billion searches on Live. In this article, we will look at research, which further illustrates the growing popularity of web TV as a platform.

Recent research by Forrester Research has shown that watching web TV is now the fourth most popular online activity, ahead of downloading music and movies. Watching online video streams was common among 54% of heavy internet users studied by Universal McCann and Insight Express.

60% of internet users have watched videos online according to the Pew Internet and American Life project. Among these, three quarters of young adult Internet users aged 18 to 29 watch online video and approximately one in three of these said they did so every day.`

It is not just the young, however, who are watching web TV. A survey by BIGresearch has revealed the shock statistic that the average age of YouTube viewers in the U.S is 39. Similarly, data compiled by Nielsen/NetRatings, comScore and Quantcast revealed that those aged 35-64 constitute between 48% and 65% of audience figures for online TV.

Clearly, downloading is popular, but uploading is not as common. Just one in 12 people surveyed said that they had uploaded a video file to a video streaming site. Those brave enough to upload should be aware of production values, as 60% of viewers said that their favourite streams were professionally produced.
10 hours of video content is uploaded to YouTube every minute and here in the UK, a staggering 3.6 billion video streams are watched each month. 20 million people tune in to content on the site, far in excess of its nearest rival, the BBC, which draws in 6 million online viewers.
A new video and movie-streaming site, FilmOn.com is looking to capitalise on the growing popularity of online video streaming. Alki David, founder of the site does a good job of summarising the reason why web TV has become so popular:
?We?re trained to watch what?s on the box, but audiences are not fools and it doesn?t take long at all to change. The YouTube generation is a good example. You can seek what you want to watch when you want.?

(AP) ? First, the Miami Dolphins missed a potential game-winning field-goal attempt in overtime, and then the New York Jets had a kick blocked with a chance at a victory, and then ...

Timeout!

Kicker Nick Folk received a reprieve that gave the Jets a wild win.

After Folk's blocked field-goal attempt in OT was negated by a timeout, his retry was a successful 33-yarder with 6:04 left, and the Jets beat the Dolphins 23-20 on Sunday.

Mark Sanchez hit Santonio Holmes for a 38-yard gain to set up the kick. Two plays later, Folk's attempt was blocked by Randy Starks charging up the middle, but the officials whistled the play dead just as the ball was snapped because Dolphins coach Joe Philbin had called timeout.

"I thought it was the right call," Philbin said. "I was planning all along to call timeout right before he kicked the ball. ... Typically we're going to ice the kicker."

Folk said he had a similar experience with Dallas in 2008, when a negated kick was blocked and he made the retry. He said he and his Jets teammates heard the whistle when Philbin called timeout, and his blockers eased up.

"I'd rather kick it than sit there and not kick it," Folk said. "I got another warmup kick."

Philbin managed a sheepish grin as Folk lined up for his second attempt. The Jets kicker then made the winner.

"You never see that happen," Miami quarterback Ryan Tannehill said. "It's a weird thing. It's one of those things where you say the odds were not in your favor today. It just wasn't meant to be."

On the previous possession, the Dolphins' Dan Carpenter was wide left on a 48-yard field-goal attempt that would have given them the victory. Carpenter also missed from 47 yards early in the fourth quarter.

"I let the team down," Carpenter said.

"We got breaks, no doubt about it," Jets coach Rex Ryan said. "We'll take the win. We're not going to give it back."

New York improved to 2-1, and the Dolphins dropped to 1-2.

"It's a tough game," Miami linebacker Karlos Dansby said. "We were inches away from 2-1."

The Jets' Darrelle Revis and Miami's Reggie Bush left the game with left knee injuries. Revis is scheduled to undergo an MRI exam Monday.

New Jets offensive coordinator Tony Sparano had trouble getting his unit moving much of the day, but in the end he called the right play just enough to beat the team that fired him as head coach last December.

"I think he's happy to get the victory for the team, not just himself," Ryan said.

Tim Tebow called a fake punt and ran for 5 yards and a first down, but otherwise again contributed little to the Jets' offense. He still has yet to throw a pass this year, and a third-down throw from Sanchez bounced off Tebow's helmet and fell incomplete.

"I was not expecting it that quick, but I guess I'll learn," Tebow said. "We got a win. That's all that matters."

Sanchez redeemed himself at the end of an erratic afternoon. His 7-yard touchdown pass to Jeremy Kerley with 3:01 left to give the Jets their first lead, 20-17.

Tannehill then moved Miami 48 yards, including 19 yards on a third-down pass interference penalty against Revis' replacement, Kyle Wilson. Carpenter's 41-yard field goal with 16 seconds left forced overtime.

Miami lost despite trailing for less than 3 minutes of the game.

"That's the NFL," Dolphins defensive end Cameron Wake said. "There's no script. It just happens."

The Dolphins had the better ground game, outrushing the Jets 185-88 despite the loss of Bush. But the Jets' LaRon Landry scored on an 18-yard interception return.

Sanchez twice missed open receivers for potential scores, made several wild throws and had a handful of passes dropped. He finished 21 for 45 for 306 yards and two interceptions. Holmes made nine catches for 147 yards.

"It was a roller coaster, no doubt," Sanchez said. "The defense and the other players picked me up when I didn't have it. It was an ugly win."

Like Sanchez, Tannehill had an up-and-down day. The rookie went 16 for 36 for 196 yards with the one costly interception.

"We expected to win," Ryan said. "But my goodness, it was tough."

Bush hurt his knee on a carry when the Dolphins were running out the clock in the second quarter. He returned to the bench after halftime in uniform and rode an exercise bike, but remained on the sideline.

All-Pro cornerback Revis departed in the third quarter with a non-contact injury.

Some Tebow trickery led to a field goal by New York. Exercising his option to call a fake, he took a short snap from punt formation on fourth-and-3 at the Jets 30 and ran 5 yards for a first down. He was glad the call worked.

"Makes it a lot easier to go back to the sideline," he said. That jump-started a 16-play drive that ended with a 3-pointer.

Tebow also drew a big cheer from the crowd when the scoreboard "Kiss Cam" showed him next to teammate Clyde Gates on the sideline. A teammate encouraged them to kiss, but they declined.

Notes: Jets WR Stephen Hill left the game with a right hamstring injury but afterward said he was fine. ... The Dolphins were 10 for 19 converting third down. The Jets came into the game last in the NFL in third-down defense. ... Former Dolphins Yeremiah Bell had seven tackles. ... Miami's Brandon Fields averaged 58.8 yards on four punts.
